Grand Banya

The largest banya in the United States — high, humid heat and the rhythmic thwack of the venik. Eastern Europe’s answer to the sauna.

The Grand Banya at World Spa, Brooklyn — the largest banya in the US, built from kelo pine with birch-and-oak venik

The Room

World Spa’s Grand Banya is the largest banya in the United States — and from the moment you step in, you’ll hear what makes it authentic: the near-constant thwack of the venik, bunches of fragrant birch or oak twigs, against skin. The venik massages the body, opens the pores and releases the leaves’ essential oils.

This is not a room for absolute quiet. The Grand Banya is a communal, rejuvenating sweat — built to invigorate mind, body and soul together. (For a calmer session, the Petite Banya next door is the quieter twin.)

As tradition demands, our banyas are built from rough kelo pine — a wood that weathers into a rare, sculptural grain and gives off a warm, relaxing scent. Banyas run hotter and far more humid than a Finnish sauna: a deep, enveloping 176–194°F at around 60% humidity.

The near-constant thwack of the venik against skin — this is the heart of an authentic banya.

Shower first. Start with a 5–10 minute session, then a cold bucket shower. On your second round, reach for the venik — massage yourself or have someone do it (no need to be aggressive; it can simply waft the hot air toward you). Then cool down — you’ve earned it — and drink plenty of water or tea.

  • Reset — a full-body sweat and a clear head.
